All About Worms
At Wigglers we farm Dendrobaena worms for composting and fishing.
Our tiny recyclers can eat up to half their body weight in kitchen scraps every day and they never sleep! Worms don’t have eyelids or a sleep cycle so they’re always on the move, breaking down waste.
They start small — really small! Baby worms hatch from tiny lemon-shaped cocoons which hatch in 3–5 weeks, depending on temperature and a single cocoon typically contains 2–4 baby worms. A juvenile worm reaches sexual maturity in about 60-90 days – they grow up fast!
They have no eyes — but they “see” light! Dendrobaena’s are sensitive to light and will quickly burrow away from it. They also breathe through their skin.
Worms with both parts! Each Dendrobaena worm has both male and female organs — talk about multitasking! They do still need another worm to reproduce.
The super squirmers have a bristly body to help them grip soil and crawl like little accordion-powered machines.
…and the best part….They poop pure gold… for your plants! Their castings are packed with nutrients and are amazing natural fertiliser.
